Do You Need To Go To College to be a Sucessful Entrepreneur?

Monday, November 26th, 2007

I pondered this question in my upcoming book, Bounce!. There are alot of famous success college drop outs like Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Richard Branson and Steve Jobs. Lesser known ones I learned about at a site called, College-Startup.com (I love their tag line- Get Rich in Your Dorm Room). Interesting and suprising to me were Simon Cowell, Barry Diller, Walt Disney, Rachel Ray, Ty Warner and Frank Lloyd Wright. Any surprises for you?

I went to college because my parents told me that if “I wanted to get a good job, I should get a good education“…guess they were right, but no one said anything about skipping college and becoming an entrepreneur. In the late 70’s, starting your own thing was certainly frowned upon.

But going to college, does have its benefits. You can learn social skills (or is that partying skills?), working in a team, and how to prioritize tasks.

What did you learn at college that helped you in business?

Tiger Woods Bounces!

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Tiger always says that you need to have a short memory in sports. Forget what just happened. You need to always focus on the next shot.

This is what it is to “Bounce!” in business. Make a short celebration of your victory OR feel sorry for your failure. But then focus your energy on what is coming next. It really does get you ready for your next great success. Focus on this long term cycle. It will give you the true business confidence that ultimately, in the long run, determines who succeeds.

The Birthing of a New Web Site

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

My wife tells me that birth is painful. I intellectually understand that but it wasn’t happening to me when she gave birth to our sons. I was only there in the delivery to be yelled at.

Today, is the soft launch of the new website (my third since 2000) that will go along with the new book, Bounce! which will be release in January. It has been a painful project to reorganize and rethink all the content from my “Frankensite” that we developed 5 years ago especially with the Web 2.0 technologies that are now available. I decied to go with Wordpress throughout the site so it would have the optimal technical design. The site is now a start.

I want to thank Susan Nigrosh (web), BJ (I don’t even know her last name, but the wordpress maven), Laura Roeder (Design), and Mary Jane Grinstead (editing). I want to thank Katherine Stoica in advance since she will be keeping the website updated and dynamic.

The most difficult part about working with so many people with a variety of expertise is to coordinate all the skills and opinions. This project was no different. Thank you to all of you for cooperating working together and showing me what teamwork is all about.
