I wonder how much of society's need to multitask and "be efficient" is rooted in fear, in light of our innate knowledge of mortality and the finiteness of ourselves. This mindset only makes rational sense if people are acknowledging that life has purpose; that work/endeavor has greater purpose than just "doing things". I try to limit my business dealings to those which serve a greater purpose, but being fallible, I too succumb to the desire to be efficient instead of purposeful from time to time.
