What holds people back from giving more on Giving Tuesday? Perhaps people are too busy to pull out their checkbook in the middle of the day (or maybe they don’t even have a checkbook any longer?). Or maybe they are too afraid to put their credit card number online with all the security breaches. In either case, this hesitancy can hurt overall charitable giving.

Sean Milliken, PayPal’s Head of Global Social Innovation wants to change all of that by making giving safe and accessible. Last year, PayPal enabled people to give almost $1B to hundreds of thousands of organizations around the world.

Sean says that this fits into PayPal’s social purpose which is to democratize financial services by having a technologically safe platform.

They want to be able to increase charitable giving by “making it easy for people to connect with and donate to their favorite cause anytime, and anywhere they are inspired to give.” Specific causes PayPal on the upswing of giving this year by Americans are hurricane disaster relief and animal welfare.

There is an additional incentive to give this year. To help people on Giving Tuesday and through the end of the holiday season, PayPal will cover all the transactions costs plus add 1% to the donation.
