In our pursuit of success, many of us base our hopes on the American Dream. This is the idea that no matter where you come from, if you work hard enough you can achieve success (think Barack Obama and Bill Gates). Certainly, this is the entrepreneurs path. A reason that we toil so much is that we believe when can execute our ideas, we can wildly successful.

But, especially now, with trillions of dollars worth of wealth being wiped out last year, we need to redefine what the American Dream is. Is it still only about the capitalist pursuit of wealth? I want to make money just like every business person does. It’s one of the ways we keep score. But we need to refocus it so it is about something more or addition to…

Summers ago, I sponsored a group of students traveling around the country in their Pursue the Passion Tour. After dinner one evening, I did a casual interview with the leader of the group, Brett Farmiloe where I talked about the American Dream. It seems like a long time ago- my kids certainly look older.

I encourage you to define what success means to you and not just follow the push from all the pressure around you from your parents, peers and the media.
