We are constantly told that we need to balance our personal and professional lives. Forget about it! In my mind, in the world of endless connectivity with my iPhone always in my pocket, this idea is simply ridiculous. There is no way this can be done. This is not to say that we can’t have a vacation or a personal life apart from business, but there are only three ways to deal with it:
1. Integrate your personal and professional lives into one life. Alot of us are “open for business” 24/7. Accept it, enjoy it, move on.
2. Partition parts of your life where work does not enter. Perhaps when you go to the health club to work out, or when you are at your place of workship. In my life, the cell phone does not enter the karate school.
3. Radio silence. Turn off the device. Tell everyone that you are going radio silent for a day or a week and you will not be there to answer voice mails or emails.
On that note, I am on vacation and radio silent for a week. See you back here on September 1.
Just saw some research from Denmark on career strategies that said relationships no longer matter. It’s now all about communicating as widely and frequently as possible your capabilities and skills — self-promotion and transactions.
Realistically, who has time for relationships anymore?
However, that’s a very un-pc POV right now.
