Listen to “#792 Pedaling into the Unknown: Exploring the Culture of Cycling” on Spreaker.
On this episode of The Small Business Radio Show…
Let me be upfront. This show has nothing to do with small business but everything to do with my other love: cycling.
The Pandemic Bike Boom led to over 54 million American bike riders pushed cities across the country to focus on new bike lanes and bike safety! The bicycle is one of the greatest inventions in human history. It can literally transport you to places you want to go—to your school or office, to the summit of a local hilltop, to some objective in your pursuit of fitness—but it can do more than that. A bicycle can also transport you to an entirely different mindset, a place where you can embrace the unexpected and live in the moment. People are drawn to riding for many of the same reasons—to test themselves, find themselves, and express themselves. To find some peace and beauty. To inject fun and adventure into their busy lives.
I interview former Editor of Bicycling Magazine, Peter Flax, who is the author of “Live to Ride: Finding Joy and Meaning on a Bicycle”. He explains the allure of cycling and why it is so important to our community (and how to protect it).
We discussed:
- Impact of cycling on individuals and communities
- Importance of community in riding culture
- Growth of bike lanes in urban cities
- Safety concerns of cycling in cities
- Social issues connected to cycling
- Inclusive and equitable access to cycling infrastructure
- Legacy of Lance Armstrong in the cycling world
- Ethical implications of winning in cycling
