In a special podcast today that I hosted with Joel Comm, Author of the NYT Best Selling Book, “Twitter Power– How to Dominate Your Market One Tweet At A Time“, He describes the best way to build a relationship online or IRL (In Real Life)
1. Like Me- You think there is something to learn from me or it will be interesting or fun
2. Get to Know Me- I tell you more about who I am
3. Trust Me- You prove over a period of time you can be trusted
4. Pay Me- Buy something from me
Joel says that the mistake that most people make in creating relationships is they jump to #4 Sell me something right away and their outreach efforts do not work.
Listen as Joel and I talked about:
1. What is the simple definition of what Twitter is?
2. How has this been used by people recently?
3. Who uses Twitter?
4. What is the biggest mistake people make in using the tool?
5. How can you use Twitter to help your business?
6. Are there case studies out there of ways people have used Twitter in Biz
7. Who do you follow on Twitter
8. Find People on Twitter work
9. Contests on Twitter
10. Best Tools to use on top of Twitter
11. Best Companion Sites
Great podcast. I was trying to take some notes while listenting to the ipod and driving to Michigan. Regarding the best way to build a relationship, I am finding that business owners often expect to be able to go right to number 4. Others intuitively know that steps 1-3 are there but they don’t know what they are or they do and think they should happen faster. To loosely quote Stephen Covey, “with people, fast is slow and slow is fast.”
Agreed- we lack patience in business!
Great podcast! This is sound advice for professionals in any field. As an educator, I build relationships with students and teachers in a similar way:
1. Be Likeable- Students learn better from teachers they think are interesting and fun
2. Get to Know Me- When students know who you are; when they see you as a “human” first; they will be more likely to share themselves, take risks, and ask for help.
3.Be Trustworthy – We show students that they can trust us with their ideas when we listen. We show students they can trust us with their futures when we model the competencies that will ensure their independence. We show students they can trust us with their hearts, when our classrooms become places where passion is pursued.
4. “Pay Me”- Students will “show us the money” when they take what we have demonstrated and apply it on their own when we are not looking! They are willing to reward us for all our work by their independence, confidence, and excitement for learning.
