Fast Company did an interesting article (from Robert Sutton’s : The No Asshole Rule) on the price of a jerk in your organization. In one particular case, they totaled up the time that it took to handle one problem employee:
$25,000: Time spent by his direct manager
$5,000: Time spent by HR professionals
$15,000: Time spent by Senior Executives
$5,000: Time spent by Outside Counsel
$85,000: Cost of recruiting a new secretary to support the problem employee
$5,000: Anger management training
Estimated total cost for the year: $160,000 not including their compensation.
We all have jerks in our business. We need to get rid of them now. They poison the organization no matter what we think they contribute to it.
