If you live in the Midwest, it’s a snow day. It would be very easy for that to mean “work from home day”, but remember when you were a kid. Remember what a real snow day was with movies, hot chocolate and playing outside?
A ‘business’ snow day can also be something different and special. Give the phones and email a day off. Instead, try one of the following:
- Sleep in late. Go ahead. When was the last time you slept in on a weekday and you weren’t sick or on vacation? Set your regular alarm but when it rings, smile, roll over and go back to sleep.
- Spend more time on social media. Let this be a day for drifting off topic and see where Facebook and Twitter take you (and what you can learn in the process).
- Do something that you never would have time to do at work. What is the one thing that if you had two hours to focus on would make a big difference in your business? Go do that today.
- For part of the day, watch a movie with your family or a nearby friend. It doesn’t even have to be Glengarry Glen Ross or Wall Street.
- Read a business book or catch up on business periodicals that you never have time to read. Skip over the information that you do not find interesting and highlight what you can use in your business.
- Video chat with friends or close clients. Connecting through video and talking only about the weather can be relationship building.
- Teach your children to be entrepreneurs. After they shovel your place, encourage them to go out and make money doing other driveways.
- Volunteer your time to help neighbors that are stuck in. This many be the most valuable thing you do all day.
- Invite a competitor to a snow ball fight. Winner takes your largest customer.
- Build a snowman to look like your ideal employee. Take enough time to admire them before it melts and becomes a figment of your imagination.
What are you going to do with your snow day?
Hey Barry,
I think that I am going to read a business book. I just finished Content Rules, and now I am ready to start reading The Referral Engine.
Slept in–check.
Spending time on social media–check. Updated Twitter account and found a glitch in one of my tweets thanks to buddy Jeff James of Spire2 Communications.
Brought home my bag of hard-copy publications I always mean to get to–gonna do some catch-up reading–check.
Reading “The Four Agreements” (hard copy)–check.
Gonna borrow my son’s Kindle and open my mind to the possibility of buying a Kindle or a Nook. For a confirmed hard copy book lover, that’s a big deal.
Sent a Skype message to a client who is scheduled to be on a trip through Cairo to let her know I’m thinking/praying for her–check.
Going to call my mom’s 80+ – year-old cousin in Carol Stream to make sure she’s OK–check.
Thanks for the suggestions, Barry! Hope you are safe and warm and enjoying this snow day, too.
P.S. I may even shovel.
If I did not have to bring my son to school I would have definitely slept in late. However, I did decide to stop and have a cup of coffee with all mom friends who did not have to run to the office. I loved playing hookey and made walking on the ice to my office a lot more fun. Enjoy making the snowman – send a picture :) I have a conference call now.
All good suggestions!! Pause! Let’s make it a different kind of day!
