In America, this past Friday of course is typically the biggest shopping day of the year (known as Black Friday) where stores open as early as midnight (think Walmart) and people start buying as early as 4:00 AM (think everyone else!). I usually don’t get involved in the mess, but this year, I saw it was my patriotic duty to buy something to help boost the economy on Black Friday. My store of choice was Menards. I entered the store for those big door busters 5 hours after the door was open expecting not to find great deals. Except for the gun cases (what does that say?) all the big discounted items were still available. Retailers reported that sales were up 3% over last year but at a steep cost of profit- many felt they needed to get their items off their shelves in a hurry.
Today of course is Cyber Monday– when everyone goes back to work and purchases those online gifts at their office’s desktop computer (Think Faster Internet Connection!). Here’s hoping that decrease in productivity for the day spells relief for the holiday shopping season.
