In this world of economic upheaval, there is a bright side- business manners are making a comeback. According to an article in last months, The Economist, in the midst of all the economic chaos, there is an “outbreak of politeness…rudeness is out, and civility is the new rule in an uncertain world.”
Adam Kalinsky from Northwestern University, (my alma mata) comments that, “During this crisis, when there is so much uncertainty about who will end up having power, the best strategy is to be civil to everyone.” My corollary to this is that you meet the same people on the way up as you do on the way down!
It is too bad that we have to get in an economic crisis for manners to come back in the workplace. The question is, will we lose them just as quickly when the recession ends in 2010?
