Meet Terry Starbucker: He is one of the nicest guys you ever want to meet in business. Terry recently wrote a short eBook called “Leadership From A Glass Half Full. He talks about how “Command and control is NOT the way to lead, despite what you may think, or what you have seen from the outside.” He discusses 5 principles:
1. Practice Full Spectrum Management: Sometimes you’ve got to be a hard ass, sometimes you have to be a touchy feely softy…the great leader needs to do it all.
2. Teach Don’t Tell: This is the only way employees can learn to do it for themselves (eventually) and for you to get leverage in your business.
3. Trust the Facts: If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. Period.
4. Know the Secrets of Work: To really be successful, it must be done with passion, fun and for a greater cause than ourselves.
5. The 7 Most Important Words in Business: “I don’t know but I will find out.” It’s not a crime not to know, but guessing can get you in big trouble.
Any leadership principles you would add?
I really appreciate the way that Starbucker distills down the advice to the basics of what matters- and what works.
My personal fave is his idea of “Full Spectrum Management”. Too many people try to find their management ‘style’ without realizing that how you manage must adjust to the specifics of the situation and the person(s).
Plus, Full Spectrum makes me think — yeah, I’ve got a LOT of tools!
Thanks for the summary!
Yes, adapting your style to the situation is the most difficult task. One size does not fit all!
6. Accept responsibility. True leaders don’t blame others. They do the homework to assess what happened, make the proper adjustments to move forward and do so.
I really enjoyed meeting both of you at #sobcon.
Thanks for the forum!
Best,
