Entrepreneurs that want to sell handmade products are no longer limited to local fairs, craft shows or online at Etsy.
Six years ago, Jodi Lewis, a registered nurse, purchased a vinyl cutter to make decorated wood blocks for local craft shows. She sold hundreds of sets for holidays as LucyLews, but the cutting, sanding and painting of the blocks was just too time consuming with her full-time job. Jodi decided instead to start selling just the wall decals for moms who wanted to inexpensively decorate their children’s rooms.
To to quit her day job, Jodi turned to Fulfillment by Amazon to sell her product to their marketplace. Since she considers herself a “one person show”, Jodi needed help with the sales and fulfillment of her orders. Initially, it was hard to give up control, but then she realized there was no time to focus on new products that customers wanted. Jodi now ships the product in bulk to Amazon instead of shipping to each customer.
Since using Amazon, her sales have doubled.
Jodi believes that the only way to compete with big manufacturers is to be listed on Amazon Handmade. To keep her profit margins, she was also able to raise her prices a bit to cover this cost.
