On my radio show this morning, we talked about something that is on many peoples mind today. Career transitions are difficult for us under any circumstances. Sometimes we choose it. We decide to quit our job or move to another place to live. Other times it is thrust upon us. We get fired, we get laid off, or our company goes out of business. None of us really like involuntary change. Even if we don’t like it, we are forced to deal with it. What can we learn from people that have had to go thru career transitions and how did they deal with it?
I talked with three people that have made interesting career transitions:
During her recent Today Show interview, Matt Lauer called Jean Newell “A fearless Boomer starting over” because at 62, Jean is a prime example of how to reinvent yourself in these challenging financial times. After her 35 year real estate career ended, Jean decided to live her passion and became an inventor successfully marketing her products to QVC and major retail stores. Listen Now! She tells us how to use “the F word”.
After owning an off premise catering and event planning company for almost 20 years, Celia Milton made a drastic change, she went to seminary in NYC, trained as a Celebrant and started a practice as a freelance wedding officiant. Listen Now! Why making guacamole put her over the edge.
A Midwestern farm girl with a flair for opera, Jan Welborn-Nichols received her Masters of Music degree from the Conservatory of Music in Kansas City. While pursuing a singing career in New York, Jan worked as a research analyst in the television industry and discovered a new career in the world of communications. After several years serving franchise clients at an agency on the West Coast, Jan settled in Ann Arbor. After her employers kept going out of business, she started Market Arts, her own creative services firm. Listen Now!
