I was the kickoff speaker today for the Youth Entrepreneurship Conference here in Melbourne. I am always thrilled to speak at these events since we need to expose students as early as possible to entrepreneurship- the good, the bad and the wonderful.

Part of the program was an elevator pitch competition. It was described as:

"Imagine that you have a great business idea and you need some finance to get the business to start up stage. You have gone into the bank in the city, pressed the elevator button on the ground floor and entered the lift. Just as the elevator doors are about to close one of Melbourne’s wealthiest entrepreneurs enters and presses the button for the 80 th floor. You have 3 minutes until the elevator reaches the 80 th floor to convince him or her that your idea is worth their support and money."

Elevator pitches are one of the toughest things as business people we try to do. How do you sum it all up in 3 minutes? What about one sentence? We need to do this since we are a verbose society with a short attention span.
