There are so many times in my career that I only wished this was true. It would make for many more people to simply have very happy careers and worry about the money side of it.
If this was true, I probably would have been a rock and roll star.
Unfortunately, this phrase has launched more companies that have failed. It creates very unrealistic expectations. Many startup entrepreneurs believe that if they follow their passion, then eventually they will be financially successful. While passion is a critical element of the puzzle, having only this does not guarantee success.
Without experience, few people can turn a passionate hobby into a business. It takes experience and a bit of luck. It takes having a solution that customers will pay to solve. It takes a team that can execute toward a common goal. It also takes some form of startup capital.
However, it is true that your passion can sustain you during those times that things in your business are not going well. But, your love of the business will never guarantee its financial success. Unfortunately, that passion can even blind you when the company is failing and you should not continue or radically change its direction.
It is important to do what you love. However, don’t expect because of that passion, financial success will automatically follow.
