The 20 Best Things Heard at SOBCON 2010

Liz Strauss, CoFounder of SOBCON

This always seems to be the busiest week of  the year.  Personal commitments only allowed me to be at SOBCON 2010 for one day, but here are great things I heard:

1. Hands are important for building business relationships. (@lizstrauss)

2. Put your fear aside, and step out from behind the curtain. (@lizstrauss)

3. Don’t try to build a coliseum, raise a barn.  Remember, if they build it, they will bring their friends. (@lizstrauss)

4. In order to be successful, you need to have a renewable tribe. (@jonathanfields)

5. When you choose not to execute, you risk failure for sure. (@jonathanfields)

6. The question is not is the glass half full or half empty, but what is in the glass? (@hankwasiak)

7. When you trade places with people, you can better see their truth. (@hankwasiak)

8. Find your mighty cause.  True power comes from your soul. (@hankwasiak)

9. To hell with perfection. (@hankwasiak)

10. Make desire more important than fear. (@hankwaisak)

11. Who is on your Mount Rushmore? (Who do you admire?) (@hankwasiak)

12. Never use these words – “How hard could this be?” (@beckymccray)

13. Generate paying customers while you are testing a new business. (@beckymccray)

14. The narrower the target is, the wider the opportunity will be. (@beckymccray)

15. Paper and pen always boot up. http://www.,

16. Look for the “desperately” interested people. (@beckymccray)

17. I am a redneck.  I learned to shoot before I learned to multiply. (@beckymccray)

18. If your new company has no competitors then you probably have no business. (@chrisgarrett)

19. Breakthroughs happen one small step at a time. (@sharnquickbooks)

20. Live your legacy now. (@hankwasiak)

What were your favorite things you heard?

A couple off the top of my head (not all direct quotes, but close)…

    -Tell the truth FAST @hankwasniak

-The people matter more than the task, b/c the culture of your business is built around the people. @jonathanfields

-Generate revenue while you test @SheilaS and @beckymccray

-Everyone you work w/ is a mini resume @scottporad

    -You can’t eat a hug @chrisbrogan

Barry, sorry I didn’t meet you at SOBCon. This is a great post, thanks for asking for my thoughts.

  2. Barry May 3, 2010 at 10:19 am

hi Ben, we did not meet at SOBCON but I met Pat at SXSW…wish I could have stayed longer to get more wisdom..I especially like Chris Brogan’s ‘You can’t eat a hug”

  3. @mckra1g May 3, 2010 at 11:07 am

A lot of stuff resonated with me over the weekend. You’ve already noted one – @beckymccray ‘s observation about the paradox between a narrow focus and broad options was a biggie.

I also took note of @sharnquickbooks wisdom about brands: “Spend time on your brand when you’re small.” It spoke to the need of defining yourself when you are still managable – before the snowball of expansion can force you as a brand into being reactive.

Saving my pennies for next year. Would. Not. Miss. It.

Glad I could spend time with you at our table on Friday! Best, M.

  4. Barry May 3, 2010 at 11:22 am

me too…wish I could have been there longer!

  5. […] Moltz’s recap: “The 20 Best Things Heard at SOBCon” is a great recap of what resonated with me, too. var addthis_brand = '360Connext';var addthis_language = 'en';var […]

On partnerships – set expectations up front via @Davetaylor

Two mentalities I hate: victim mentality and lottery mentality via @annmichael

  7. Barry May 3, 2010 at 9:56 pm

@carol roth- I loved all of these! thanks for the additions!

  9. Lucretia Pruitt May 4, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Sorry I somehow missed hanging out with you in Chicago Barry – it was crazy-busy but good.

    A couple of my favorites:
“when you’re making people a little bit nervous? You’re on the right track” @Tedmurphy
“Get the right people on the bus, then trust them” @davetaylor
“Metrics are not the goal – they help you determine how to achieve the goal” @ambercadabra

  10. Barry May 4, 2010 at 2:53 pm

I was only there for one day Lucretia- Next year, I go for 3!

  11. Mary-Lynn May 5, 2010 at 3:49 pm

I liked what Sharon Gitelle said about how big corporations and social media, “Let go and trust your employees to be your advocate.”

I also liked waht Rick Murray said about marketing, “If what I say & what I do are not connected, it is not personal”.

I could go on and on. What a great event!

  12. John Richardson May 5, 2010 at 3:55 pm

    Random sayings at SOBCON…

    OS!M @stevefarber

“Hey… there is some guy that looks like me in that elevator!” from a passerby while standing in front of the mirrored elevator doors in Hotel 71.

They aren’t coming to us… we have to go to them…

“Revolutionary hat” , talking about Steve Sherlock’s amazing triangular hat in the underground.

  13. George Krueger May 8, 2010 at 1:07 pm

    “Forget perfection. Pursue progress.” @hankwasiak

“If your heart’s not in it, it’s just a transaction.” @scottporad

Ditto the comment @LucretiaPruitt pointed out by @tedmurphy: “When you’re making people a little bit nervous, you’re on the right track.” Makes me think I might be doing something right?!

The therapist must largely think out the use of scripture in terms of why the
use of one scripture over another is appropriate and whether
the particular scripture will engage the whole person. For millions of

    of knowledge and guidance.
